Marketing analyst Harpointner, chief executive of AIS Media, an Atlanta-based marketing company, said stores are turning more to online advertising. Theoretically, prospective back-to-school shoppers will check out deals online for clothes, electronics and school supplies, and then head to the local retail branches to make purchases.
"The online audience tends to be more receptive because, on the Internet, people search things out," Harpointner said. "People might get offended if they see back-to-school ads in the retail stores earlier."
